Decentralised renewable energy empowers the global energy transition
Day: Sunday, 4th of October
Time: 16:00 – 17:30
Africa: a Green Continent of Opportunities
While future energy demand and economic growth continues to rise, the exploitation of fossil fuel resources exerts pressure on the climate and environment. Finding answers to the risks becomes an urgent imperative both at the climate negotiations in December 2015 and with the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda in September 2015, which intends to set the frame conditions for sustainable development based on economic, social and ecological principles. As energy constitutes the main driver for fostering development, numerous countries have expressed strong interest in transitioning their energy regime towards an increased reliance on renewable and efficient energy.
The African continent possesses huge potential for environmental and technological “leapfrogging” in the form of decentralized renewable energy systems. Increasing awareness of the profitability of decentralized energy markets, new and innovative technologies as well as potential business opportunities have made off-grid renewables a cost-effective alternative for providing energy services and access in regions lacking grid connectivity.
However, a successful global energy transition requires close international and regional cooperation, especially with regards to realising the goals formulated under the UN Sustainable Energy for All Initiative for universal access to modern energy (electricity and clean cooking fuels) until 2030.
2015 will be a decisive year!
