South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA)
Moeketsi Thobela, a graduate electrical engineer with an MBA, has worked in various areas within the renewable energy sector in South Africa. His initial involvement was as consultant in the establishment of the Renewable Energy Finance and Subsidy Office (REFSO) at the then Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) in 2005. Subsequently, he was Programme Manager on a research and capacity-building programme that included feasibility studies on small-scale hydro, as well as on the Renewable Energy Market Transformation Project – which was sponsored by the World Bank and Department of Energy. His other consulting assignments included project preparation for the second phase of the South African Wind Energy Project (SAWEP II), as well as an assessment of the permitting requirements related to bio-energy projects. He joined SAPVIA as CEO on 1 October 2014, and has focused his attention on promoting solar PV as an energy security option.
